A man has died and another was rescued after their boat capsized in northern New South Wales.
Two people were reported clinging to an upturned hill of a 6.5-metre half-cabin runabout boat near the North Wall of the Tweed River about 6am today, police said.
A multi-agency rescue mission - consisting of police, helicopters and lifesavers - began.
A man was winched out of the ocean by a helicopter and taken to the nearby Duranbah Beach, where he was unable to be revived.
The man, yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.
A second man was pulled from the choppy water and taken to Tweed Heads Hospital to be checked as a precaution.

An investigation has begun and it is believed the pair were not wearing life jackets at the time.
"Police have been told the men launched the boat from the Kennedy Drive boat ramp a short time earlier and were heading out across the bar when the boat capsized," police said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
