Hundreds stranded in NT town as Cyclone Megan hits

Hundreds of people are stranded in a remote Northern Territory town after Tropical Cyclone Megan made landfall on the Gulf of Carpentaria.
After building to a category three storm yesterday, Megan downgraded to category one overnight, the Bureau of Meteorology said.
Up to 700 people have been cut off in the town of Borroloola, about 50km from the coast.

Dangerous weather conditions have prevented evacuation aircraft from landing.
Dangerous wind gusts of up to 140km/hr have hit parts of the region.
Even though the storm has weakened, the BoM still forecasts gusts of up to 120km/hr in places, and of more than 80km/hr at Borroloola.
Heavy and intense rain is expected for the south-western Gulf of Carpentaria coast this morning, and may even extend into the Gulf Country in Queensland.
