Internet prices are set to rise - but there are ways to save money

There's more bill pain on the way amid the ongoing cost of living crisis - this time with internet prices set to rise as part of the NBN's upgraded technology.
But there's a simple step that can land families big savings.
Naomi Dorland, who runs an online business, says she and and her family would struggle to live without the internet.

"I work from home. My twins are at high school, so everything's very heavily reliant on the internet," she said.
But like many, she's facing internet price hikes come July 1.
NBN Co is increasing their wholesale costs which will be passed onto consumers through internet providers.
Phillip Portman from Compare the Market said the hikes were set to be between $4 and $6 a month, which is around $100 a year.

"It's gonna hurt Australians at the hip pocket when we're being hit in every direction," he said.

These days most plans have large or unlimited data allowances.
But it's the difference in speed you're paying for.
"You may find that you're not using as much Internet as you were in the past, so you may want to move to a cheaper plan," Portman said.
For example, you only need a basic speed if you work or study from home and stream videos in standard definition.

A premium speed is for larger households who stream in high definition and have hobbies like online gaming.
The difference between the two can be as much as $25 a month.
"There's a number of ways that you can cut costs, there are honeymoon deals, so a lot of providers want your business, and it's a very competitive market right now," Portman said.
While some perks expire after a set time, it's worth checking out current deals.
Compare the Market says other incentives at the moment include Telstra's $100 a month premium NBN plan which is offering two months Binge and four months Spotify Premium included.

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Bank customers who are in their Yello program can get between 30-40 per cent off More electricity.
There's savings of up to $15 a month if you bundle internet with electricity and gas plans with Origin, Dodo and Sumo.
Dorland said she may look for better deals.
"As long as they can offer us a stable, reliable connection and hopefully for a cheaper price, then we'll easily switch," she said.
