New Zealand broadcasting veteran Joanna Paul-Robie has this morning shared she is dying from cancer, during Matariki celebrations.
Paul-Robie, known for reading the prime time news on TV3, helping launch a new television network and being a valued board member of Māori Television and funding organisation Te Māngai Pāho told RNZ that she was "unfortunately dying''.
She was speaking about winning the Icon Award at the Ngā Tohu Toi Awards yesterday evening and said it was the "most honourable experience of my life".
"I was so touched because this award means so much to me coming from Tauranga Moana," she said.
"But more importantly because I am, unfortunately, dying, I have terminal cancer, and really to have this award before one posthumously gets it is an even better break."
Receiving the award with whānau surrounding her Paul-Robie said she felt "lightness", "brightness" and "aroha" inside.
