A December cold snap has also blanketed parts of the UK in snow as temperatures plunge to -11 degrees in some parts.
The heavy snow in northern England forced motorists to seek shelter or spend the night in their cars.
It also knocked out power to more than 2,500 customers.
The Cumbria Fire & Rescue Service said it worked through the night to get drivers out of cars stuck in deep snow.
Cumbria Police Superintendent Andy Wilkinson said the storm was more significant than forecast and people were urged Sunday not to travel to the county.
Schools, churches and a scout hut were used to provide emergency shelter for stranded travellers.

The Met Office, the UK's meteorological agency, issued a weather warning for ice in parts of the Midlands, the north of England, much of north and central Wales and eastern Scotland from Sunday evening to noon Monday.
In the north of England, trucks jackknifed in the snow, blocking highways, as drivers reported taking hours to complete short trips while others were forced to find a place to stay along their routes or in their vehicles.
While vehicles travel were seen travelling along the snow lined and empty A939 in Grantown on Spey, Scotland as the freezing temperatures continued.

The UK wasn't the only country impacted by the weather.
All flights were grounded at Munich's airport on Saturday, December 2 after a winter storm dumped snow across southern Germany and parts of Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic, sparking travel chaos across the region.
Trains to and from Munich's central station were also halted, Germany's national railway said, advising passengers to delay or reroute their journeys.
The heavy snow fall meant trains were unable to leave the central station in Munich.
