A new kind of wheat with six times the standard amount of fibre is about to hit the market.
The wheat flour was developed by the CSIRO in collaboration with national and international farmers and has shown promising health benefits when ingested.
The wheat is grown in Victoria and New South Wales and will be available to purchase soon.
"Over the 20 years we've been able to make a very exciting breakthrough," Damien Belobrajdic, CSIRO principle research scientist, told 9News.
"Through conventional breeding practices, they were able to develop this particular variety.
"In a study we conducted, it lowered the blood sugar response by about 30 per cent"
"Also provides a whole lot of benefits to Australian farmers that have the opportunity to grow the grain."
The grain also contains high levels of resistant starch, which helps feed good bacteria in the stomach.
"We need to eat more resistant starch in our diets, Australians are not getting enough," Heart Foundation senior dietitian Jemma O'Hanlon told 9News.
Allied Pinnacle will launch the product next year and says the grain tastes exactly like normal wheat.
"Consumers are not going to detect they're eating anything different," CEO David Pitt told 9News.
