Officers arrived at the home to find a fire at the front door, which was quickly extinguished.
Police allege the man "deliberately set fire to the front door of the house while four other occupants of the house were inside".
There were no physical injuries from the fire.
The 57-year-old man was arrested and charged with arson and four counts of endangering life.
He was refused police bail and appeared in Christies Beach Magistrates Court yesterday.
