South Australian police will have a new, high-tech chopper at their disposal in a matter of days.
In a significant upgrade to its aerial surveillance capabilities, the state's police force has introduced a new Airbus H145 helicopter, worth $25 million, to enhance public safety and law enforcement operations.
Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said the new aircraft is "faster, quieter, and more technologically capable" than the 30-year-old chopper it's replacing.
"We can do our jobs as safely as possible, minimising the risk to the community and minimising the risk to police officers as well," he said.
"One of the most dangerous things we can be involved in are high-speed pursuits."
The helicopter will be instrumental in manhunts, combating hoons, and high-speed pursuits, providing greater efficiency and minimising risks to both the community and police officers.
Its enclosed rear rotor makes it the quietest helicopter in its class.
"It is 10 times quieter and local residents we know will appreciate that improvement," Police Minister Dan Cregan said.
Taxpayers will foot the $150 million dollar bill, which also includes a new rescue helicopter.
The chopper is due to be fully operational from Friday.
