A man managed to jump out of his ute before it was hit by a freight train in a 'lucky' escape in Tasmania's north-west this morning.
Emergency services were called to the scene after a white Toyota ute and the Tasrail train collided on Stonyrise Road in Devonport about 6am.
"Luckily the vehicle had stopped and... the driver had exited but at that particular time, there was an oncoming train," Tasmania Police Inspector Shane LeFevre said.
"Unfortunately, the train has collided with the vehicle."
The Toyota was pushed along the tracks before the train came to a stop.
LeFevre said luckily the driver was out when the crash occurred so he didn't have any injuries.
"The disruption to the train and obviously the impact on the driver and the train staff is pretty significant."
LeFevre said it looked like the driver had been inattentive and missed the road markings but officers were still preparing the report.
He said there had been similar incidents at that intersection recently so they would be providing recommendations.
"I guess we're in the onset of winter, it is dark, people can't quite see the line marking so that'll be something that we will recommend."
Police are urging drivers to take care of road markings when it is dark and wet in winter.
There were road diversions in places but the intersection is now clear.
Tasrail is also investigating and they have been contacted for comment.
