Police have launched a force standards investigation after the death of a man who was arrested after running away from a Craigieburn pile-up.
Officers were called to the intersection of Craigieburn Road and Waterview Boulevard about 6.10am after reports a car had collided with two other vehicles.
Police were told the driver, who is yet to be formally identified, ran from the scene.
He was arrested by a member of the public before police arrived and took him into custody.
Police said the man became unresponsive during the incident.
He was treated by paramedics but was pronounced deceased at the scene.
No one else was injured during the collision.
Detectives will investigate the incident, with oversight by Professional Standards Command.
