The ski fields had "very much above average" temperatures in July, with Australia as a whole recording the 9th warmest July since records began in 1910.
The snowfall was short-lived as Tuesday's flakes came in a relatively quick burst.
"The main band of moisture was pretty narrow," Weatherzone said.
"Perisher received 5.8mm of precipitation in its official weather station between 9am and 12.30 pm," Weatherzone said.
"You can also see cold air pushing northwards from Bass Strait on the loop above and that should generate a few more snow showers throughout the day, especially at the southernmost Victorian resorts Mt Buller and Mt Baw Baw where snow is desperately needed."
Weatherzone said Thursday's snowfall was far from a game changer in terms of repairing the damage of last month's weather.
"It should also make for a softer skiable surface at the higher resorts like Hotham in Victoria and Charlotte Pass, Thredbo, and Perisher in NSW, as well as providing ideal snowmaking conditions for a couple of nights in the cold air in the wake of the front."
