Christmas day weather guide: Capital city state-by-state forecast

Multiple states across Australia are in for severe weather this Christmas Eve, with predictions of heavy rainfall, large hailstones and damaging winds.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Queensland and New South Wales for this afternoon.
It comes as nearly all cities are expected to have cool temperatures and possible thunderstorms tomorrow, according to the Bureau of Meteorology's latest weather predictions.
Here is what the bureau is predicting the weather will be in each capital city tomorrow, Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

Sydney, New South Wales

Those living in New South Wales have been told to brace for large hail, heavy rainfall and damaging winds today after the bureau this morning issued a severe weather warning for the state.
Potentially severe storms have been forecast to develop over Murrundindi and Tenterfield, with most of the wild weather to affect the northern parts of the state.
The next few days will bring a blend of mild-to-warm temperatures, high humidity, and stormy weather, according to the bureau.
There will be a "high chance of showers" in the afternoon for Sydney on Christmas Day, and a chance of a thunderstorm, with a top of 28 degrees forecast.
Residents living in flood zones have been urged to "take care and prepare".
Warnings were issued for parts of the Illawarra, South Coast, Northern Rivers, Mid-North Coast and Metropolitan Sydney.
Boxing Day will be a warm and cloudy 30 degrees. There is a medium chance of showers, with potential for severe thunderstorms.

Brisbane, Queensland

The next three days in Brisbane are slated to be hot, muggy, and stormy.
Today will be a partly cloudy 30 degrees, with a "very high chance of showers" and the chances of a thunderstorm in the afternoon.
The Bureau this morning issued a severe weather warning for southern Queensland.

Storm cells have moved east over the Darling Downs and Granite Belt which could potentially bring large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall, which could also move into the Lockyer Valley and Scenic Rim regions.
The pattern will continue tomorrow and on Boxing Day, with another round of thunderstorms forecast for the afternoons and evenings each day.
Brisbane is set to be 33 on Christmas Day and 33 on Boxing Day.
For the rest of Queensland, the bureau is predicting showers and thunderstorms for much of Central and North Queensland.

Melbourne, Victoria

Rain and storms are set to kick off on Christmas Eve in Melbourne, accompanied by strong winds, shaping up for a wet, windy, and stormy night.
Christmas Eve in Melbourne will likely reach 24 degrees.
Christmas Day has a "very high chance of showers" and possible a thunderstorm in the afternoon, with a top of 23 degrees.
"Hobart and Melbourne will both be subject to southeasterly winds, bringing areas of cloud and cooler-than-average temperatures," BoM said for the Christmas Day forecast.
"Showers remain possible, especially in the morning, but hopefully clearing to brighter and drier conditions in the afternoon."
Boxing Day will also be partly cloudy at 23 degrees, with a high chance of showers.

Canberra, Australian Capital Territory

Canberra will have a cool and wet festive period, similar to Sydney's.
Christmas Eve is expected to be 20 with a "very high chance of showers" in the afternoon and evening, as well as a possible thunderstorm.
The conditions will be similar on Christmas Day and Boxing Day but with slightly warmer tops of 23 and 25 degrees respectively.

Adelaide, South Australia

Adelaide will be 22 degrees and partly cloudy on both Christmas Eve, with the slight chance of a shower, making way for a cooler and breezier Christmas break.
Christmas Day is expected to reach 20 degrees with a medium chance of showers about the hills and southern suburbs.
Residents should anticipate mostly cloudy and windy conditions on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
"Adelaide should see some sunshine this Christmas day, but an early southeast wind could mean a cool and cloudy start for Christmas morning," BoM said.
Boxing Day is expected to be slightly cloudy and 23 degrees.

Perth, Western Australia

Hot and sunny conditions are expected for the Christmas period, with elevated risk of fire in place.
Christmas Eve is expected to reach a warm. sunny 36 degrees, with Christmas Day a slightly cooler 33 degrees and sunny.
Boxing Day is expected to be 25 degrees and partly cloudy.

Hobart, Tasmania

A cloudy Christmas Eve will bring temperatures of 20 degrees, with a medium chance of showers.
Christmas Day will see more clouds and a slight chance of a shower at 21 degrees.
Boxing Day will bring cloudy conditions and 22 degrees, with a medium chance of rain.
Hobart and Melbourne are expected to experience similar weather.

Darwin, Northern Territory

A humid Christmas Eve will see temperatures of 35 degrees, with a possible storms.
Christmas Day and Boxing Day will reach an overcast 34 degrees with afternoon thunderstorms possible.
"The Northern Territory can expect some seasonal afternoon showers and storms around Darwin, although the risk of any Christmas impacts due to the remnants of Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper look very unlikely," BoM said.
