A car and body have been recovered from a dam in Perth's eastern suburbs after neighbours called emergency services distressed.
Police said a blue Mitsubishi Lancer hatchback left the roadway near the intersection of Forrest Street and Eason Road in Sawyers Valley and crashed into a dam on a private property about 10pm yesterday.
Local police, St John WA and the Department of Fire Emergency Services attended the scene a short time later.
Water police used an underwater drone to search the dam but the operation was suspended due to the conditions.
Police divers returned to the scene today and the car was removed from the dam at 11am.
Officers then discovered the body of a 34-year-old male inside the vehicle.
Neighbours told 9News Perth they heard a loud bang last night, feared what might have happened and called Triple Zero.
Emergency crews found tyre marks and debris near the scene.
"I just heard a sort of a swooshing sound as a car came down Stephens Street," one neighbour told 9News Perth.
"There was absolutely nothing I could do, the dam is about three metres deep, very murky and very cold.
"It's terribly tragic, you don't want this ever to happen on your doorstep."
